Kylie’s Rant is KYE’s latest Ep following the release of Ribena 2 years prior. Kylie’s Rant feels like a body of work that embraces feelings of love, uncertainty, growth and self-discovery that comes with your 20s. Speaking via her Instagram, KYE describes this Ep as an honest conversation about the everyday, and we’d have to agree. Each song feels like a reflection or realisation across topics that we can all relate to, in the past, present or future.
Gospel
Gospel serves as a warm welcome to Kylie’s Rant. Gospel feels like a reflection of an internal struggle between connection to Christian sensibilities and the external influences that are now guiding her journey towards self-discovery and redefinition, the Kool aid, that contrasts those sensibilities.
Gospel acknowledges that there is a privilege in having newfound beliefs and being provided the privilege to live them out. It challenges listeners to walk alongside their fears to live the lives they desire. KYE reminds listeners that sacrifices were made in order for us to chase our desires, as a result the message is made even more impactful as we shouldn’t waste the opportunity we were given.
Once you have taken that step to redefine yourself KYE reminds us that regardless of which choice you make uncertainty remains. Life isn’t straight forward and because of that nobody has the answers. So as you shouldn’t be afraid of the uncertainty of navigating life, just remember to take the lessons and truths of those who came before you.
Let us know if after listening to Gospel will you drink the Kool aid or serve tea?
29
29 shines the light of the internal struggles and complicated feelings that come with getting older and having to navigate the responsibilities of adulthood, especially when you don’t feel like an adult, but you have the very adult foreboding feeling of time is running out.
KYE explores feelings of being lost in the illusion of adulthood and the idea that you come of age when you add another digit to your birthday and the expectation of that making you an adult, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
In the outro KYE leaves the listener with a message of acceptance. She reminds listeners that they have time left on this journey, they aren’t expected to find their destination at 29.
The song ends with a perfect reminder that your life is just starting, and you have a long way to go!
Love Yourself
Love Yourself is the light that shines on Kylie’s Rant, it highlights unapologetic self-acceptance and aspiring to let your authenticity shine in every space you enter.
This is the song that will pick you up when you are feeling like dimming your light and hiding from your truth.
KYE describes situations where we’ve held back for fear of class, being cringey and uncharismatic. We hold ourselves back by not saying anything, from aiming higher and doing more and moving through the world without trusting anyone with your authentic self.
Instead of ruminating our situations, KYE wants the listener to reach for a feeling regardless of all the constraints that have been placed upon us and start living more authentically.
On my first listen this song made me want to run across a field and just shout. Its an amazing cathartic experience listening to Love Yourself, highly recommend it for anyone who’s feeling stuck.
Kylie’s Rant
KYE closes out her Ep with Kylie’s Rant, a remorseful but hopeful love song that reflects the emotional teramole of needing to leave a relationship but not being able to let go. It is an honest look at a complicated and insecure relationship from the perspective of someone minimising their desires for a closer relationship with their partner who preferers a situationship, a causal relationship or the denial of labels. KYE confronts why this relationship continues. The recognition that the lack of clarity is unfair, needing to leave due to the hurt but not being able to let go, and most importantly because they feel like home. Kylie’s Rant ends with KYE seemingly accepting that she will always want more out of the relationship than her partner, but she is content with their boundaries if that feeling of home remains.
Anyone dating in the age of nonchalance and no labels can relate to this song, no matter their perspective. This is a love song for the times, that doesn’t romanticise a contemporary romance with ideals present in older love songs. It’s the perfect song for anyone’s perfectly imperfect situationship.
Overall, the Ep is a cohesive body of work that achieves KYE’s intention of making an honest statement about navigating relationships in your 20’s. Kylie’s Rant gives its younger audience a taste of how their relationships may change in the future or affirms that they aren’t alone in what they are going through. For older audiences its an opportunity to understand those younger than them or to reminisce and reflect on their growth when they were in KYE’s shoes.
